I knew I was going to be away from my computer for a while, so I just let it run. I got to 9660 s/p in about 48 hrs on an i5-2500 / GeForce GTX 560 Ti hybrid. Using one large curved mesh light is so much more efficient than multiple smaller flat meshes.
Yes, I also like to limit numer of lights to minimum. And while I run similar configuration (just with the exception of Graph. card - I run ATI) I render at approximately the same speed. Still, just waiting for the image to clear is killing me.
Rendering to 9K S/p would kill me, though I did get to 6,5K at some occasions.
